How Many Champions Trophy Titles Has India Won?
India has won the ICC Champions Trophy three times, in 2002, 2013 and 2025. The 2002 championship was shared with Sri Lanka after rain prevented a result in the final. India later won outright against England in 2013 and New Zealand in 2025.
India has also finished as runner up twice, in 2000 and 2017. Its 2025 victory came under Rohit Sharma in Dubai, where India defeated New Zealand by four wickets and completed an unbeaten campaign. This made India the first team to claim three Champions Trophy titles.
India’s Champions Trophy Titles at a Glance
India has three titles from five appearances in the final. Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma captained the team during its championship campaigns.
| Year | Final opponent | Result | Captain |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2002 | Sri Lanka | Shared title | Sourav Ganguly |
| 2013 | England | Won by 5 runs | MS Dhoni |
| 2025 | New Zealand | Won by 4 wickets | Rohit Sharma |
India’s 2025 victory moved it ahead of Australia, which won consecutive titles in 2006 and 2009. India now holds the record for the most Champions Trophy championships.
When Did India Win Its Champions Trophy Titles?
India’s three championships came in different conditions. The first was shared after a rain affected final in Colombo, the second followed an unbeaten campaign in England, and the third came after another unbeaten run in the UAE.
1. India and Sri Lanka Shared the Title in 2002

India won its first Champions Trophy title in 2002, when Sri Lanka hosted the tournament. Sourav Ganguly captained the Indian side, which reached the final after defeating South Africa in the semifinal.
The final was played in Colombo and affected by heavy rain. The match was attempted on two days, but neither India nor Sri Lanka could complete a result. Both teams were declared joint champions. Therefore, 2002 counts as India’s first Champions Trophy title, although it did not win the final outright.
2. India Won the Title in 2013
India claimed its second Champions Trophy title in 2013 under MS Dhoni. The tournament was held in England and Wales, and India remained unbeaten throughout the competition.
In the final at Edgbaston, India defeated England by five runs in a match reduced to 20 overs per side because of rain. India scored 129 for 7, while England finished on 124 for 8. Ravindra Jadeja made an unbeaten 33 off 25 balls and took 2 wickets for 24 runs. His all round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
The victory gave India its first outright Champions Trophy title and completed an unbeaten tournament campaign.
3. India Won the Title Again in 2025
India secured its third Champions Trophy title on 9 March 2025, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Rohit Sharma captained the team, which won all five of its matches during the tournament.
New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat, scoring 251 for 7 in 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell scored 63 off 101 balls, while Michael Bracewell remained unbeaten on 53 off 40 balls. Both batters made important half centuries on a slow, two paced Dubai pitch.
India chased the target and reached 254 for 6 in 49 overs. Rohit Sharma scored 76 off 83 balls, Shreyas Iyer added 48, and KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 34. Ravindra Jadeja hit the winning runs as India completed the chase.
The victory was India’s fifth Champions Trophy final appearance and its second final against New Zealand. The two teams had previously met in the 2000 final in Nairobi, where New Zealand defeated India to win its first title. The 2025 result therefore completed a 25 year turnaround for India against the same opponent.
Rohit Sharma received the Player of the Match award for his innings of 76. New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 263 runs, including two centuries. He became only the second player from a losing finalist to receive the award, after Chris Gayle in 2006.
Why Did India Play the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai?
Pakistan were the official hosts of the 2025 Champions Trophy, but India played all its matches in Dubai under a hybrid hosting arrangement. India did not travel to Pakistan after the Indian government declined permission for the team to tour on security grounds.
On 19 December 2024, the ICC confirmed that India and Pakistan matches at ICC events hosted by either country during the 2024 to 2027 cycle would take place at neutral venues. This arrangement applied to the 2025 Champions Trophy, with Dubai selected as the neutral venue for India’s matches.
India played its three group matches, semifinal and final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Pakistan hosted the remaining ten matches across Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.
The final was originally scheduled to take place in Lahore. However, the ICC’s fixture announcement confirmed that it would move to Dubai if India qualified. India reached the final by defeating Australia in the semifinal, so the championship match was played in Dubai.
The arrangement also led to discussion about India’s advantage of playing every match at one venue, while other teams travelled between venues in Pakistan and Dubai. India’s five victories in Dubai secured the title, but the single venue arrangement remains an important part of the 2025 tournament story.
Why Was There an Eight Year Gap Between Champions Trophy Editions?
The Champions Trophy returned in 2025 after an eight year gap. The previous edition was held in 2017, when Pakistan defeated India in the final. The ICC subsequently removed the tournament from its calendar as it aimed to organise one major international tournament for each format of cricket.
The ICC later brought the Champions Trophy back into its event schedule. Pakistan was awarded hosting rights, and the ninth edition took place from 19 February to 9 March 2025. It featured eight teams and 15 matches across Pakistan and Dubai.
The return meant that the tournament resumed after its longest break since its introduction as the ICC KnockOut Trophy in 1998.
India’s Performance in Every Champions Trophy Edition
India has participated in all nine editions of the tournament, including the first two editions played under the name ICC KnockOut Trophy. Its record includes three titles, two runner up finishes and four campaigns that ended before the final.
| Year | India’s result | Key outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 | Semifinalist | Reached the last four |
| 2000 | Runner up | Lost the final to New Zealand |
| 2002 | Joint champions | Shared the title with Sri Lanka |
| 2004 | Group stage | Did not reach the final |
| 2006 | Group stage | Exited before the knockout stage |
| 2009 | Group stage | Did not qualify for the semifinals |
| 2013 | Champions | Defeated England by 5 runs |
| 2017 | Runner up | Lost the final to Pakistan |
| 2025 | Champions | Defeated New Zealand by 4 wickets |
India’s record shows that its success has come across different generations of players and playing conditions. The team reached the final in 2000 and 2017 but lost on both occasions. Its title winning campaigns in 2013 and 2025 were particularly strong because India remained unbeaten in both tournaments.
How Did India Perform in the 2025 Champions Trophy?
India won all five matches in the 2025 Champions Trophy, finishing the competition without a defeat. The team defeated Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage before beating Australia in the semifinal and New Zealand again in the final.
| Stage | Opponent | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Group stage | Bangladesh | India won by 6 wickets |
| Group stage | Pakistan | India won by 6 wickets |
| Group stage | New Zealand | India won by 44 runs |
| Semifinal | Australia | India won by 4 wickets |
| Final | New Zealand | India won by 4 wickets |
Shreyas Iyer was India’s leading run scorer with 243 runs. Virat Kohli scored 218 runs, while Rohit Sharma contributed 180 runs. These performances helped India build a dependable batting order throughout the competition.
India’s bowling was equally important. Mohammed Shami and Varun Chakravarthy took nine wickets each, while Kuldeep Yadav claimed seven. The spinners played a major role in controlling the middle overs, particularly on the Dubai pitches.
The final against New Zealand tested India’s ability to manage a chase under pressure. Rohit’s 76 gave the team a strong start, while Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul helped keep the target within reach. Jadeja finished the match as India reached 254 for 6 in 49 overs.

India leads the Champions Trophy winners list with three titles. Australia has won two championships, while South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies and Pakistan have each won the tournament once.
| Team | Titles | Winning years |
|---|---|---|
| India | 3 | 2002, 2013, 2025 |
| Australia | 2 | 2006, 2009 |
| South Africa | 1 | 1998 |
| New Zealand | 1 | 2000 |
| West Indies | 1 | 2004 |
| Pakistan | 1 | 2017 |
India’s 2002 shared championship is included in its total, and Sri Lanka is also recognised as a joint winner of that edition. Counting shared titles is important when comparing the tournament’s historical records because the final did not produce a sole winner.
Who Captained India During Its Champions Trophy Wins?
Three different captains have led India to its Champions Trophy titles. Sourav Ganguly captained the side in 2002, MS Dhoni led the team in 2013, and Rohit Sharma was in charge during the 2025 victory.
| Captain | Year | Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| Captain | Year | Achievement |
| Sourav Ganguly | 2002 | Shared the title with Sri Lanka |
| MS Dhoni | 2013 | Defeated England in the final |
| Rohit Sharma | 2025 | Defeated New Zealand in the final |
Each captain led India through different tournament conditions. Ganguly’s team shared the trophy after rain interrupted the final, Dhoni’s side won an unbeaten campaign in England, and Rohit’s team completed another unbeaten run in the UAE.
Why Is India’s Champions Trophy Record Significant?
India’s record is significant because the Champions Trophy brings together a limited number of the world’s leading ODI teams. With only eight teams in the 2025 edition, each match had a direct impact on qualification and the route to the final.
India has won titles in different eras and conditions. The 2002 championship came through a shared result, the 2013 victory followed a rain shortened final in England, and the 2025 title was secured through five consecutive wins in Dubai.
India has also reached the final five times: in 2000, 2002, 2013, 2017 and 2025. Its three championships and two runner up finishes reflect its consistent presence in the competition’s decisive matches.
Conclusion
India has won the Champions Trophy three times, in 2002, 2013 and 2025. The first title was shared with Sri Lanka, while the next two came through final victories over England and New Zealand. India has also finished as runner up twice, in 2000 and 2017.
The 2025 campaign added another milestone to India’s record. After an eight year break, the tournament returned with Pakistan as the official host and Dubai as the venue for all of India’s matches under the hybrid arrangement. India won all five matches and became the first team to claim three Champions Trophy titles.
